ANGELES PORTILLA,
Angeles Portilla (Mexico, 2001) is a visual artist who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California (2023). She currently lives and works in Puebla, Mexico.
Her practice encompasses performance, Polaroid photography, and objects. Through these media, she explores everyday ritual as a tool for agency and resistance, personal mythology as a system of meaning, and the visibility of the private as a political act. Her rituals, some inherited, others created by herself, are not the subject of her work: they are its raw material.
Angeles chooses Polaroid as her primary photographic medium because of its materiality and sovereignty: each image exists first as a unique and unrepeatable physical object, and enters the public sphere only when she decides. The original always remains in her hands.
Her work does not propose a system. It proposes a possibility.
